Weekend Discussion Thread: What Are You Listening To These Days?
We don’t have much of a community here yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have the occasional discussion thread. And, I’d already like to get beyond the dour subject matter of yesterday’s post.
So, been listening to any good songs, albums, or musicians (either new discoveries or old favorites) lately that you’d like to shout out in the comments?
As for me, I don’t have much patience for double albums, let alone triple albums, which is why I haven’t listened to George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass record. Until the other day, “My Sweet Lord,” “Wah-Wah”, and “What Is Life” were the only songs I’d heard off of it. But after using some discovery features on Spotify and RateYourMusic.com, recently I came across a fourth, “Art of Dying.”
There are a few versions you can hear of it (full playlist at bottom of post), including a demo version that is just Harrison and his acoustic guitar; a 2014 remaster that really emphasized producer/convicted murderer Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” technique, and a 2020 mix where the instrumentation and Harrison’s voice are not quite as drowned out as in the 2014 mix. I recommend either of the latter two over the demo.
Anyway, the 2014 mix is now my most-played song the last 7 days.1 Before that, I was listening a lot to a live, orchestra-backed rendition of Public Service Broadcasting’s “Lit Up.” You’ll want to listen to the original first but I think the orchestral version may be even better.
Just 4 times, as I spent the last week listening broadly instead of deeply.
